Why would I enjoy pains when I can avoid it? Nothing stops me from asking for help when I need it. How about you? Are you in that group that has issues with a simple “Please can you show me how…..?” This is especially so when there is sufficient evidence that this person has overcome the obstacle that I’m faced with.

Today, I invite you to look in the mirror and ask the man there a few questions – Could I have a better way to live my life? Is this the best I can be? If I continue in this direction for the next 5, 10 years, would I truly tell me that I’ve done well? Is there an aspect of my life dragging the rest back, that is are you – in the right job/business; earning enough to take care of the bills plus a little extra; healthy and fit; spending quality time with the family; spending time to network with great friends; enjoying some fun time, learning some other vocations and hobbies; clear about the means through you’ll give back to the society and laying solid, inseparable link with your God?

I admit here that we are all at different stages of evolution and so some of these 8 Success variables may not resonate well with you at this time. However, it is important to know that success is incomplete when one variable isn’t in sync with others. Without trusted and helpful friends for instance, the quality of your ideas would be sub-optimal, your army of cheerleaders, comforters and champions will be lean and there won’t be close allies to celebrate your success. That won’t feel or taste like success I bet you.

We should pay a good deal of attention to the future, for we will spend the rest of our lives there.

Anytime I feel bored, for more than a little while, it’s time for a reality check. If you are like me, then this is a wake-up call. Are you hungry for success? Are you prepared to open your mind to new ideas, not completely subdued by the “environment”? Are you willing to empower yourself to do better, turning life into successive days of celebration rather than an endurance trip? There was a time in my life when I was scared of how I would live at 60, 65.

One of my businesses involves truck drivers, conditioned to living by the day and far removed from the emotions of profitability imperatives. This is a class of employees who control the physical asset but not the sustainability or optimization of the business it generates. The assets themselves depreciate rather quickly, thanks to the damaging roads plus the drivers’ attitude. As I drowned in my worry, my family was slowly being ignored. I was alone in my world, unsure of what to do. I wasn’t playing my usual game of squash to keep me healthy anymore. My friends weren’t seeing much of me. And a lot more damaging things kept popping. I bet you can relate with this in some way? One thing connects with another and then another, robbing you of good health, fun, healthy bank account, self-esteem and general well-being. I knew something had to give. I gave my thinking a complete overhaul.

You can’t solve a problem on the same level of thinking that created it – Albert Einstein

Then I simply decided to wake up. This is where trouble shows up for most of us. We are conditioned to fear the unknown. Our decisions are based either on the promise of a gain/pleasure or avoidance of loss/pain. Which one do you think is mostly applicable? Yes you got it if you chose avoidance of loss or pain. We want to go to heaven without dying!

Thinking is a big deal. When I realized this, I simply freaked out. The solution to every problem is only an idea away. We suffer from busy-ness, recycling the fearful thoughts about how things might be difficult to change, especially when we surround ourselves with the people who suffer the same afflictions. Now that you’ve come this far with me in this article {name}, let me give you the 5 keys that will stimulate a change in your life. These are the foundational tools I’ve been using and they work. I’m blessed with great health, family, friends and an assured future full of wealth with great fun to go with on the journey.

But first here’s a short story I hope you’re not familiar with, to get you thinking:

“A guy was on his way to the shops, driving his car. He suddenly caught a glimpse of a school mate he hadn’t seen in years. After a few minutes, the girl of his dreams, who was still rather elusive, showed up at the bus-stop close to where he and his friend stood chatting, recalling the good old days. And just as he was about introducing the babe to his buddy, there was this frail-looking old woman who clearly needed an urgent medical attention. So here was his dilemma: he wanted to reconnect with his childhood friend, he was dying to spend time persuading the girl for them to spend the rest of their lives together and here was this old woman who had to be rushed to the hospital. How would you have proceeded?

Let your friend go or dismiss others? Hope to catch up with the babe some other time or bid others good luck? Ignore the sick old woman or abandon the two others?” Think about this for a while. I’ll give you my answer towards the end. Stay with me and don’t cheat!

Here are the 5 keys:

It’s dangerous to continue living a life of regret. It all begins with awareness of what’s not working. Yes we all make mistakes; however, not learning from them is indefensible. If you know for a fact that you deserve a better deal, there’s no one to give you but you. Do a critical self-appraisal. Know thyself! This is huge for most of us. Get angry if you like but be brutally frank with yourself and make a promise to stop wasting your time; your life. Start with a dream about what it is you really want. Start with a dream of how you want things to show up. It’s your right to live well. That is God’s wish for your life. But you know what? The best way to make your dream come true is to wake up. If you want things in your life to change, you have to change the things in your life. First comes thought; then organization of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is your imagination. Everything you are and everything you become is determined by your choices and decisions. The greatest discovery you will ever make is the potential of you mind. Use it creatively. Everything that was ever made started as a thought.

The best way to predict the future is to create it. Having determined some things have to change, it’s important to know that the solution to every problem is only an idea away. Your results are borne out of actions, powered by your beliefs. A belief is what you consider to be the truth about reality. Create new ideals about who you wish to be. It matters not for how long you’ve been off-track or what the reality is. All you have to do is know where you are going, the answers will come to you on their accord. You cannot change your destination overnight but you can change your direction. Get an experienced Coach to help in discovering the Purpose for your life. The purpose of life is a life of Purpose. What are your strengths; your Passion? Document specific areas you’d wish to improve upon. It may be your CareerWealth creation,Health and fitness, your Family life, Relationship issues, Adventure and Fun times, Legacy, what you’d wish to be remembered for at the end of time or Spirituality, your relationship with your God, Until thought is linked with purpose, there is no intelligent accomplishment. Purpose creates an opportunity for value creation, Passion follows Purpose, Passion creates energy and money is attracted to energy. What we see depends on what we look for. You cannot hit a target you have not set. Set your life objectives with milestones. Do this without any consideration for how things are at the moment. Be your own life’s script writer! Nothing is impossible.

You can’t solve a problem on the same level of thinking that created it. Your desire must be greater than your fears. Be the Architect! Now that you know some specifics about what you want, it’s time to put things into perspective. What new knowledge will be required to achieve set targets? Who in your opinion has the pedigree to help you discover the roadmap that works? What level of resources will be needed? Will you require some form of apprenticeship? For how long? What will be the involvement or sacrifice from the family? What new routine, must you generate and follow? All of these and more you will need to evaluate before you start your journey to transformation. Remember, you’ve got to feel the pain to make the change.

A goal without a plan is only a dream. Ambition is the path to success; persistence is the vehicle you arrive in. A goal is a dream with a deadline. Never draw a plan or have a goal that’s not SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound.  What is not measurable cannot be managed. Prepare to be challenged by your goals and plans. Fear, doubt and worry will show up but remember that obstacles bring about growth. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; they are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Seek to be courageous. Courage is the door that can only be opened from the inside. Be determined to give your best in all you do. What you don’t need are excuses. Excuses are the nails used to build a house of failure. As you take inspired action, spend time to meditate. Meditation helps you get clarity, intuition as well as improves your health. 15 minutes per day is sufficient in the beginning. If you need help on how to meditate, I’d be glad to help. Pay attention to who you become along the way becauseSuccess is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become. There’s huge difference between having a million naira in your account and being a millionaire. Transforming your being is the only way to keep re-creating your result, including wealth. You’ve got to change who you’re being to attract what you want. This is huge but we’d go deeper into this in subsequent articles. And you must keep learning to develop yourself, personally and professionally, while encouraging those very close to you to do same; otherwise you’d probably lose them, physically or emotionally. That’s not what you want to happen. It’s true what they say; income rarely exceeds personal development.

If a boat is not rocking, it’s not going anywhere. Ready, Fire, Aim! That’s the formula for those who understand and put the success code to work. Procrastination, Lack of Focus and Perfectionism are three cousins present in our lives. The time will never be perfect to start a change. Use what you have, when you have it, to get what you want. It’s that simple. As you proceed; do course-correction. Imagine yourself as the ship captain; the ship of your life. If everything along the way must be determined ahead of the journey, then you’d stay in the harbor forever. You can change your performance by changing your mental pictures. Use your imagination; it’s more powerful than strong will. Remember, first you must get it designed before it is produced. That’s how Google, Facebook, Ford Motors, Microsoft, Apple, Dangote, Zinox or Glo brands all came to life. Here’s one phrase I love – Don’t be afraid of demons, be afraid of being stupid. And of course remember that quality will always pay huge dividends. We are what we repeatedly do, excellence therefore is not an act but a habit. Finally, create the kind of self you will be happy to live with all your life. You must review your results continuously. Some goals you will drop, new ones will surface. Be prepared to adjust your variables as it become necessary. Change is what it is; things will keep changing. Continue re-inventing yourself and learn from your mistakes but use the juice of future visioning of what you want in life to energize the present.  In any case, wherever you are; please be there!

You may need to re-read this article, to get the whole gist. I’m confident there are a few things you can put to use almost immediately. All you need is the Intention, Discipline and the Determination to pull things through. I‘ve been there before so I know it works. I can’t wait to meet you at the top.

Ah yes……..before I go; the answer to the puzzle?

I would ask my friend to take the sick woman to the hospital for medical attention while I treat the girl-of-my-my-dream to a nice lunch while I launch a correct manifesto. Before he returns to pick us up, I’d have hit the bull’s eye. That way, everybody wins. That’s an out-of-the-box thinking!

Wishing you the life of your dream

Ps: A fool learns from his mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. Remember in the last article I wrote about Affirmation? It’s a tool for all time. As you imagine your future, also affirm what specific ways you’d wish to function or things to happen. All the effort put into writing or reading this would be wasted without putting them to use. Start with just one thing today and soon you will experience the difference.
